Idda

In 1481, the Fischingen monastery commissioned a legend from the dean of Einsiedeln with the aim of establishing itself as a destination for pilgrims. The dean fabricated the dramatic story of a countess who survived her femicide and from then on led a holy life in seclusion. This PR campaign was so successful that churchmen continued it consistently over the following centuries and embellished the legend of Idda von Toggenburg – just not with her perspective. I ask myself: How did Idda protect herself from her husband during the marriage? What preparations did she make for her escape? And how did she later deal with what she had experienced?
